After NFIRS
NFIRS is gone. Here’s what replaces it.
Every 2026 incident goes to NERIS. If your department reported through eNFIRS or an older RMS, here are your options and what to look for.
The timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2025 | Hybrid year: departments could report to NFIRS or NERIS. |
| January 1, 2026 | All incident reporting moved to NERIS. No 2026 incidents go into NFIRS. |
| January 31, 2026 | Last day to edit 2025 incidents in NFIRS. |
| February 2026 | NFIRS taken offline for all users. |
Your three options
1. NERIS’s own data capture tool
NERIS access is free for verified departments, and departments without records software can enter incidents through NERIS’s web-based data capture tool. It covers incident reporting. It doesn’t keep the rest of your department’s records — training, apparatus, inspections, permits — and state guidance has noted there’s no smartphone app yet.
2. Records software connected to NERIS
Records management systems (RMS) can file to NERIS through its API. FSRI lists vendors that have met the NERIS V1 technical requirements on its integration partners page. An RMS keeps your reports with your roster, apparatus and everything else, and can check reports before they’re filed.
3. Your current vendor’s NERIS update
If you already use an RMS, ask whether it files to NERIS directly, whether that costs extra, and whether it checks reports with NERIS before filing.
What to look for
- NERIS V1 compatibility — the vendor has passed FSRI’s technical check.
- Validation before filing, with errors you can understand without a code book.
- Corrections that update the same NERIS record instead of creating a new one.
- A price you can see and that doesn’t charge per member.
- Phones and bad signal — your officers will write reports from the cab.
- Your data, portable — the ability to download everything if you ever leave.

NFIRS questions
Is NFIRS still available?
No. All incidents from January 1, 2026 go to NERIS, and the U.S. Fire Administration took NFIRS offline for all users in February 2026.
What replaced NFIRS?
NERIS, the National Emergency Response Information System, run with the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI). Departments report to NERIS through NERIS’s own data capture tool or through records software connected to the NERIS API.
Is NERIS free?
NERIS access is free for verified fire departments. Records software that connects to NERIS, like ExigentOps, is a separate choice that adds the rest of the department’s records and checks your reports before they’re filed.
What happened to our old NFIRS data?
USFA advised departments to export their eNFIRS data before the shutdown if they didn’t keep incident records elsewhere. Historical NFIRS data is not carried into NERIS. Check with your state NFIRS program manager about what’s available now.
